Top 4 Fabrics to Avoid When Shopping for Clothes

Most of our clothes are made out of fabrics that are neither healthy for us nor comfortable to wear. Lately it has been really frustrating to go shopping because every time I walk into trendy stores like Forever21, I see most clothes are made out of fabrics that to me are unwearable. You will usually find good quality clothes made out of nice fabric at expensive stores but I think it is unfair to most of the population that can’t afford to buy quality clothes. The only clothes most people can afford are made out of fabrics that might actually be harming them. Below I will list the top 4 fabrics to avoid that I always find in stores and I will list 4 fabrics that I wish all clothes were made out of.

4 Fabrics to Avoid: Synthetic Fibers

1. Polyester

This fabric is very popular among stores now a days and it frustrates me so much. Not only is this fabric made out of artificial fibers, which is bad for you, but it will make you sweat a lot because it is an unbreathable fabric. Mostly all blouses are made out of polyester and it is my biggest complaint that I can’t wear any of them because they make me heat up quick. You might get away with it if it's not long sleeve but bottom line, don’t wear Polyester if you don’t want to sweat bullets.

2. Acrylic

It is very common for sweaters and cardigans to be made out of Acrylic fabric. The health concern for this fabric according to the EPA is that it may cause cancer (it is seen as one of the causes for women’s breast cancer). The fashion concern for me, which I found out the hard way, is that Acrylic will make you extremely itchy. One time I bought a cardigan that I fell in love with, but I did not realize it was made out of Acrylic and I wore it once and never again. Now I know to avoid clothes made out of Acrylic at all costs unless I want people to think I have chickenpox.

3. Nylon

Nylon is a synthetic fabric that was intended to be a replacement for silk. This fabric is one of the least eco-friendly fabrics and has toxins that can be harmful and cause Cancer, headaches, skin allergies, and other health problems. A lot of sports clothing are made out of this material as well as leggings and women’s pantyhose. Fashion wise, I think Nylon just looks cheap and tacky for the most part.

4. Rayon

Rayon contains a lot of chemicals that release toxins and can cause several health issues such as nausea, insomnia, vomiting, etc. If that doesn’t worry you than you should know that clothes made out of Rayon wrinkles so easily and is very hard to maintain. Unless you want to look like you just rolled out of bed and didn’t iron your clothes, avoid wearing Rayon.

4 Fabrics to Look For: Natural Fibers

1. Cotton

Cotton is amazingly comfortable to wear and very breathable. This fabric will not irritate your skin and will not give you hot flashes or cause any health problems. Try to find clothes made out of cotton from now on, even if they are mixed with other fabrics.

2. Cashmere

Cashmere is such a luxurious fabric, it is so soft and fluffy that you will never want to stop touching it. This fabric is not only soft but it's also long lasting, it is like wine, it becomes better (softer) with time. Scarves and sweaters are the most common article of clothing made out of cashmere.

3. Linen

Linen is perfect for summer because it keeps you fresh and cool. However, you should know that clothes that are made out of 100% Linen crease and wrinkle like crazy so if you don’t want that you should look for something that is combined with another fabric.

4. Silk

Silk is such a beautiful fabric and feels so soft on the skin. It is a light fabric that allows your skin to breathe and is promised to keep you cold during hot days and warm during cold weather. It is actually recommended to sleep on silk sheets because it has many benefits, so if you can afford it go for it.

When you think about living a healthy lifestyle you only think about nutrition and diet but you should also start thinking about what types of fabrics are all around you. Next time you go shopping take a minute to look at the labels of the clothes you pick up and try to make healthy decisions in choosing your fabrics. I never buy anything made out of synthetic fabrics anymore or at least I try not to. I now know what fabrics are unhealthy and uncomfortable to wear and even though my options are limited, I know that the clothes I buy from now on will be comfortable and won’t harm me in any way, and that makes me feel happier. The new year is coming up, make it your resolution to start detoxing your wardrobe!
